Hi Everyone! My name is Mary and I am currently a senior at the College of Saint Elizabeth majoring in Foods and Nutrition. I recently volunteered to a Nutrition Editor at a site called Foodpicker.org which was designed to help people with diabetes become more educated. I have decided to created this blog as a sort of question and answering tool for all of you out there who have questions on nutrition whether they are related to the work that I am going to be doing for the Foodpicker.org site or for your own personal wellbeing.
Let me tell you a little bit more about myself and my background. When I graduated high school I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I had it set in my head that I was going to be a teacher an that was final. There were no questions about it. I went off to college, far, far from home and started to get my degree in education. Well, I hated the school I was at. I loved my major, but I hated my school! So, I transferred closer to home and was happy. I continued with education, but soon I began to think, is this really what I want to do? I always loved health and wellness. Over the summer I became certified to teach Group Fitness classes and Personal Training. I had always had a passion for nutrition and eating well. I had been sick for quite some time so my doctors put me on a gluten-free diet. I had to learn all the complicated in's and out's of the diet and I became engrossed in the lifestyle change. I read books and fell in love with learning about the gluten-free diet and other diets out there. I found myself wanting to go out and find other people who needed to be on a gluten-free diet (either if they were gluten intolerant or who had celiac disease) to educate and talk to about different products that were out there or how to cope.
So, my love for nutrition caused me to change my major. I left the school I was at and the major I was in and transferred to the College of Saint of Elizabeth after much thought and consideration. I was almost three years into my degree and this was a big step to take. I am so happy I made the choice to switch! I immediately knew I was in the right major and fell in love with all of my courses. I now am very excited to be ending my didactic program in May. I hope to be able to go on to an Internship program next year so that I can hopefully become a Registered Dietitian and help people. That is my ultimate goal.
I hope to be able to help any of you out there who might have questions on diabetes or any other questions related to FOODPICKER.org or nutrition. Your health is of the utmost importance. We must take care of our bodies and give them the proper nutrients that they need. We are only given one body for our entire life. For that reason it is extremely important that we treat it right. That means giving it proper nutrition and exercise.
Please feel free to contact me with questions or comments and don't forget to check out http://foodpicker.org. Until next time, stay healthy!
